MOLDS FOR MAKING ART STONES

Silicone molds are BEST for making art stones. They are non-stick so they do not need to be coated with a releasing agent.  Just wash them out when you are done making stones and that's it.  Simple and easy.

You can also use flexible plastic molds or flexible cookie cutters to make art stones, you will just need to make sure the plastic is flexible to be able to remove your art stone from.  Also, you will have to use vegetable oil to coat the plastic molds or cookie cutters to be able to remove the art stones.

Here are some of my favorite Molds for making Art Stones!

2. Silicone Baking Molds

You can find a variety of silicone baking molds at craft and kitchen stores and Amazon.  I found these great ones on Amazon that make awesome Art Stones for painting.

Small 2.5 inch Oval Molds

This set of two molds has quickly become one of my favorite little molds! The stones are oval in shape and are 2.5 inches in length by 1.75 inches wide. It makes 16 stones.  I fill them up to 1/2 inch of thickness and they make a cute little oval stone.   A  20 ounce batch of mortar filled to 1/2 inch thickness makes about 14-16 stones. They are sold on Amazon for about $8.00.

Medium 3.5 inch Oval Stones

I discovered these oval molds at Baker Depot, two molds for only $8.00.  You can make up to 12 stones at a time.  You can make about 7-8 stones with 20 ounces of mortar filling the mold about 3/4 of the way.  If you fill them less they are too thin on the ends and can break.  The stones are about 3.5 inches long by about 2.5 inches wide. I really enjoy painting these!

Small 2 inch Round Mold

This set of  2 molds makes 16 round stones that are 2 inches in diameter.  I fill them up to 1/2 inch of thickness which is about 1/3 of the way.  A  20 ounce batch of mortar mix makes about  14-16 stones at the 1/2 inch thickness.  These are great for rock hiding!  They are sold on Amazon .

Medium 3 inch Round Mold

This mold makes 12 stones that are 3 inches in diameter.  It is a high quality mold. Very strong and sturdy.  A 20 ounce batch of mortar will make about 10-12 stones if filled to a 1/2 inch thickness.  The mold is a bit pricier than the others.  It runs about $20.00 on Amazon.

Heart Shaped Art Stones

I found these silicone heart molds at Baker Depot for only $8.00 for two molds.  You can make up to 12 stones at one time. These molds make a great flat heart shaped stone.  I fill the mold about half way and they turn out perfect.  You can make about 6-7 of these stones with 20 ounces of mortar. These heart stones are about 2.5 inches in width and length at their widest points.

3. Cookie Cutters

You can also use cookie cutters to make fun shaped stones!  The metal cutters work the best and preferable 1 inch thick in depth.  You want the stones to be at least 1/2 inch in thickness or they will be thin and easy to break.  You can use plastic cookie cutters but be sure they are flexible and not too stiff.  You will for sure want to use veggie oil on all the cookie cutters as it a bit challenging to get them without it.  You will also need a silicone craft or baking mat to make them on. The mat will create a smooth flat surface for your art stones so they can be painted.  For info on how to use cookie cutters with the mortar see the post "Using Cookie Cutters To Make Art Stones".

HOW MANY ART STONES WILL A BAG OF MORTAR MAKE?

A 55 lb bag of Rapid Set Mortar will make about 29 batches of 20 ounce mortar.  Depending on the size of the stone here is about how many stones a 55 lb bag makes:

55 lb bag =  406 - 464  Small Art Stones (14-16 stones per 20 ounce batch)

55 lb bag =  174 - 290  Medium Art Stones (6-10 stones per 20 ounce batch)

55 lb bag =  116  Large Art Stones (4 stones per 20 ounce batch)

Happy Rocking!
