How To Decoupage Rocks

Decoupage is the art of decorating something with paper. In this post we will cover how to decoupage napkins or a print out onto a stone. The traditional way involves Mod Podge. But if you want to use paint pens or add paint accents over your napkins/print out then you will use Matte Medium to attach the paper/napkin to the stone instead of Mod Podge.

Supplies Need

* A smooth stone
* A decorative napkin or a print out on tissue paper or regular printer paper
* White Chalk Paint
* Mod Podge
* Matte Medium (only if you are going to add writing or painting accents on top)
* Paint Brush
* Sealer

1. Base coat your stone with 2 coats of white chalk paint.

2.  FOR PRINT OUT :  Print out your image on tissue paper or printer paper.  Let the ink dry at least overnight so the ink doesn't smear when you apply the Mod Podge. Then cut out your image to fit your stone.

3.FOR NAPKINS;  Select the section of the napkin you wish to decoupage. Peel your napkin layers down to the one ply that has the design on it. This will help ensure that you don’t have any lumps. You can use tweezers to peel away extra layers. Next, cut a bit larger than the shape of your rock out of the napkin. Go around the edges adding in little cuts to help you form it over the round edge of the stone.

4. Add a layer of Mod Podge over your stone.

5.  Next, carefully lay your print out or napkin down onto the stone. Then working from the center outward gently smooth out air bubbles.

6. Trim off any extra print out / napkin that might be hanging over the edges of the stone.

7. Very gently add a layer of Mod Podge over the entire stone using a brush.

8. Allow your stone to dry several days and then seal as you normally would.

SPECIAL NOTE!  If you wish to add writing or accents with paint pens, glitter paints or acrylic paints to your napkin / print out, then don't use Mod Podge.  Instead use Matte Medium.  You can find Matte Medium in the art section in most Craft Store and at Walmart.

1.  Simply apply the Matte Medium to the stone instead of the Mod Podge and then lay your design on it and smooth out.  Then cover the design and entire stone with a layer of Matte Medium using a brush.

 2. Once it's fully dried, you can then write or paint over the top of the Matte Medium.

3.  Wait several days for your paint pens and paints to dry.  Then apply a coat of Mod Podge over the entire rock if you used pens of any kind. This will prevent the pens from smearing when you seal.  Let it dry at least 1 hour after applying the coat of Mod Podge then seal like normal.

HAPPY ROCKING!
